How often do we think about where our tea comes from? A great cup of tea starts way before the kettle goes on!
We love Birchall Tea, they’re a family-run British tea company with history and heritage that stretches back more than 150 years. At the heart of Birchall’s Great Rift teas are carefully selected leaves from smallholder farmers in East Africa.
Why East Africa?
The Great Rift Valley runs for thousands of kilometres across East Africa and provides some extraordinary landscapes and climate conditions for growing the world’s best tea.
In this video, Birchall shows us how growing tea at altitudes of 2,000 metres provides the cooler air, gentle rainfall and rich volcanic soil required for growing high quality tea.
The landscape is as remarkable as it is beatiful and the Virunga Mountains form part of a region where rainforest, mountains and savannah meet.
See where Birchall Tea begins
In this two minute short film, Birchall takes us to East Africa to see this amazing landscape and meet the people behind its tea.

Why we love Birchall Tea
Birchall have been one of our favourite brands since we started Totally Tasty. Understanding where the products we sell come from is becoming increasingly important to us. It’s one of the reasons we’re so pleased to work with suppliers like Birchall. We love the genuine and tangible environmental and social benefits such as their support for smallholder farmers and investment into the UK’s only solar powered tea factory. On top of that, Birchall Tea is Britain’s most awarded tea for taste!
